The Federal Heath Care Bill

The big ticket item of the week of course, is health care.  Despite public opinion opposing that particular legislation (Rasmussen, CNN etc), the Socialists in Washington hammered through their Health Care Reform bill. They bought and bullied the moderate Democrats into submission, which will be sorely remembered in November. The electorate who bought the “Hope and Change” message in ’08 has figured out that this is now what they wanted.  We have been inching away from a free market capitalism for a century. The sudden leaps during toward socialism in the last few years (TARP, ARRA, big-time bailouts, HCR bill) has awoken the spirit of a people who truly wish for less Federal involvement in their lives. And the GOP had better get its message right.

The Republican party has been criticized by the far right for being “democrat light”, and rightfully so. The GOP had the opportunity in the past to actually reform government in the right way: practical reductions in it’s size and scope. When the pendulum swings our way again, let us not fail to do the right thing.

As for HCR itself, that battle isn’t over yet, of course.  State AG’s are lining up Constitutional Lawsuits. An of course, there is always the possibility of repeal from a future Congress.  Assuming a GOP majority in Congress, defeating Obama in ’12 would end it altogether. I haven’t done the homework yet, but is it mathematically possible to win enough US Senate seats, this year, for a GOP veto-proof majority? I may be dreaming….

A Surprise Visitor

Last Sunday evening, my doorbell rang. My first thought was “who the (expletive) could that be,” then opened the door for a pleasant surprise. On my doorstep was GOP Governor hopeful Marty Seifert, flanked by Representative Joyce Peppin (R, 32A- Rogers). I may lean toward Tom Emmer (I was on his slate, after all), but is good to see Marty working hard on his campaign. It’s good to know we have two excellent candidates. It will be easy to get behind whichever of them wins endorsement.

Now that I’ve made this public, should I expect a visit from Emmer?

The State Auditor campaign trail

Unless you count carrying signs at a parade, the first campaign I have ever been involved with is with State Auditor candidate Randy Gilbert. I’ve spoken on his behalf at several BPOU meetings and have taken a ton of pictures and video of speeches and debates; yes there have been debates for auditor hopefuls. I’m putting together a few media packages for gilbertforauditor.com, and perhaps more. If you are a delegate to the State Convention, you will be hearing from us soon. Randy is certainly the best candidate for this office this year (with all due respect to Pat, Jeff, and Tom).

Shameless Plug

With the above campaigning experience, I am becoming more comfortable (and  skilled) at campaign communication. If you are running for office, are on a campaign staff, or have an event you would like photographed or recorded, please contact me. I want you to win (If you are GOP, that is), and I want to help you deliver your message.

In Closing

I’d like to start following more closely the Hennepin County Commission, Met Council, and other such government agencies that kinda fly under the RADAR. Three Rivers Parks is another. If you have an event or meeting that deserves blog coverage, contact me. I’ll make it if I can.

It’s been a while since this site has been actively updated, but good news! I’m positioning myself (and schedule, for that matter) to get back in the saddle, so to speak. Between holidays, family tragedies,  and a seasonal overnight position, I haven’t had the time or wherewithal to keep RRGO updated. But it is time for a change! Minnesota’s legislative session is about to begin and the election cycle heating up, there is plenty to opine on.  I’m also involved in few other projects, which I may be able to talk about publicly in the near future.

Thanks for the patience, it will pay off soon!

Chris

I was handed a press release last week from Richard Glasgow, founder and Chair of Dear American Hero. It reads as follows:

GOP Party Member, In a Leadership Role, Trashes Veterans and is Rewarded.

ST Paul, MN – A Minnesota Republican Party member, in a leadership role, trashed veterans in a letter to the St Paul Pioneer Press. This member proclaimed to be one of the newer anti-war Republican activists who proclaimed veterans to be communists.

Repeated attempts to resolve this matter with the current Minnesota GOP administration, to censor and/or remove the member, has resulted in the member being placed into a highly visible position within the GOP.

In response to this disparaging letter, veterans and other concerned citizens will be protesting as the Minnesota GOP Convention October 3, 2009, at the River Center in downtown St Paul, Minnesota. The protest will last until Noon.

I was taking a look at a website today that I found very interesting. Since I am a firm believer that if you become a citizen of America, you should be required to learn and speak English. See my view here.

The website I was reading (englishfirst.org) states in part of the bill, that health care facilities, to be allowed to participate in the public plan (ObamaCare), must provide translators for a variety of selected languages, otherwise they will not be approved. See the website.

By imposing this regulation, facilities will have to cut costs elsewhere to fill the translator positions – such as doctors, nurses, anywhere they can – just to be eligible for ObamaCare. This means that facilities won’t be able to afford doctors of specialties, high priced equipment or even to take care of YOUR need.

I also find it hilarious that the AARP once had the administration clarify that they were not endorsing the health care plan, but then they run this ad on television:

Pick a side and stay there! I guess loosing over 60,000 members in a month and a half wasn’t enough for AARP to realize that maybe ObamaCare isn’t what the people want.

When it comes to schools, America has nothing to be proud of. In the land of the free and home of the brave, many of our nation’s inner city schools stumble within a 40 and 50 percent dropout rate and the country as a whole lags behind in almost every field of study when compared globally. I myself used spell check too many times already in this opening paragraph and I just graduated high school! When many of our citizens hear this news they gasp, grab the phone and call their local representative to do something to help our schools, trying to be vigilant until the end when change has come!—well maybe not, it’s more like sit back brush it off and wait for the unions and district to try and raise property taxes and, depending of their mood, voting yes or no. Simply throwing good money at bad won’t solve our problems anymore. It’s time to push aside the Teacher’s Union and welcome a renaissance of education and learning in this country with the help of the free market. While every system isn’t perfect, the one that gives the citizens the most opportunity and chance to improve their education no matter what class or race they are is through the use of school vouchers. Sunday’s Mankato Free Press contained an article about a possible new bike trail that would run through several communities around Mankato. All that is needed is to come up with $400,000, since “all six local governments want to explore the construction of a new bike trail from Mankato to St. Peter.” Those six governments (the cities of Mankato, North Mankato, and St Peter; Counties Blue Earth, Le Sueur, and Nicollet) would like that money to come from next year’s state bonding bill, which their DFL legislators (Rep. Terry Morrow, DFL-St. Peter, and Sen. Kathy Sheran, DFL-Mankato) are sure to fight for. People expect their politicians to bring home the money (read: pork). Why does that get my attention? Principle. Continue reading »

Kurt Zellers (R-Maple Grove) was just elected by his peers in the Republican House Caucus as the new Minority Leader. He recieved 32 votes on the 4th ballot to finally defeat Randy Demmer. Zellers says he hopes to “restore fiscal sanity.”

Since Zellers in the rep from my house district, I hope to talk with him frequently about the direction of the legislature.

Congrats, Kurt!

Governor Pawlenty’s victory over the tax-hiking DFL legislature is leading to massive cuts in the state budget. One area of note that is suffering is Local Government Aid (LGA). This is leading to a Greek chorus lamenting the damage to small city budgets, and the subsequent raising of property taxes (read an example here). Continue reading »

It’s official. The president who says that he does not want run a car company has proposed that the Federal government own a majority stake in GM. We on the Right often remark that over-regulation inches us closer to Socialism. This may be true, but the dictionary.com definitions refer to Marx’s revelation: Socialism is the intermediary between Capitalism and Communism.  Today’s GM bankruptcy and Federal buyout plan doesn’t move by inches, but miles. Governor Tim Pawlenty has crafted for himself an important event in his political career. He promised to veto any tax increasing legislation this year, and did. He warned if the DFL did not wish to participate in discussion about where spending was going to be reduced, he would do it himself. The DFL legislature failed to override his veto then attempted again to raise revenue by $1billion and called it an offer of compromise. After all, it was only 1/6 of the budget shortfall. But Pawlenty has stuck to his guns. Armed with his line item veto and power of un-allotment, the Governor will now balance the budget himself. He had better do it well. Continue reading »
