A Michigander by birth, I occasionally check out the Detroit Free Press for “local” coverage of the sports teams I love. Yes, I cheer for the Lions. But I also have the Red Wings, so it’s a wash. At any rate, a front page story caught my eye that I had not seen covered anywhere else.
Lost in the glare of the government takover of GM, is a restructuring of it’s non-North America operations. Leading the way will be Shanghai, China – where Buick models are assembled for Asian markets. As a fan of free markets, I say if they are doing some thing right, we should be using that formula to other places the best we can. As a child of Flint, MI, it makes me a bit nervous to know that the Chinese are building and marketing Buick better than we did. Read the full article here.

Six communities to ask for state $ to "study" bike trail possibility
Sunday’s Mankato Free Press contained an article about a possible new bike trail that would run through several communities around Mankato. All that is needed is to come up with $400,000, since “all six local governments want to explore the construction of a new bike trail from Mankato to St. Peter.” Those six governments (the cities of Mankato, North Mankato, and St Peter; Counties Blue Earth, Le Sueur, and Nicollet) would like that money to come from next year’s state bonding bill, which their DFL legislators (Rep. Terry Morrow, DFL-St. Peter, and Sen. Kathy Sheran, DFL-Mankato) are sure to fight for. People expect their politicians to bring home the money (read: pork). Why does that get my attention?
